The sodium blood test measures the concentration of sodium in the blood. Sodium can also be measured using a urine test. Blood is drawn from a vein (venipuncture), usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand.

Sodium blood test results that are higher than normal may be a sign of a condition, such as: Dehydration, which may be caused by not drinking enough, diarrhea, or certain medicines called diuretics (water pills) A disorder of the adrenal glandsA kidney disease.

Heart, kidney and liver problems.

Congestive heart failure and certain diseases affecting the kidneys or liver can cause fluids to accumulate in your body, which dilutes the sodium in your body, lowering the overall level.
