An alkaline phosphatase level test (ALP test) measures the amount of alkaline phosphatase enzyme in your bloodstream. The test requires a simple blood draw and is often a routine part of other blood tests. Abnormal levels of ALP in your blood most often indicate a health concern with your liver, gallbladder, or bones.
High alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels may indicate that there’s damage to your liver or that you have a type of bone disorder. Liver damage creates a different type of ALP than bone disorders do.
Disorders that do not primarily involve the liver such as intra-abdominal infections, cholestasis of sepsis, Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloid metaplasia, and osteomyelitis can also cause moderate elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase.
