A potassium test measures the amount of potassium in blood serum, the fluid part of your blood. Potassium is a mineral that helps: nerves and muscles “communicate” nutrients move into cells and waste products move out of cells.

You may have this test to diagnose or monitor kidney disease. The most common cause of a high blood potassium level is kidney disease. Potassium is important to heart function. Your provider may order this test if you have signs of high blood pressure or heart problems.

Although your body needs potassium, having too much in your blood can be harmful. It can lead to serious heart problems. Having too much potassium in your body is called “hyperkalemia.” You may be at risk for hyperkalemia if you: Have kidney disease.
