Prolactin is a hormone released by the pituitary gland. The pituitary is a small gland at the base of the brain. It regulates the body’s balance of many hormones. Prolactin stimulates breast development and milk production in women.

Prolactin, also called luteotropic hormone (LTH) or luteotropin, a protein hormone produced by the pituitary gland of mammals that acts with other hormones to initiate secretion of milk by the mammary glands.

Prolactin is a hormone that’s responsible for lactation, certain breast tissue development and milk production. Higher-than-normal levels of prolactin in your blood can cause certain symptoms, such as irregular periods, infertility and erectile dysfunction.

Prolactin levels normally rise during pregnancy and breastfeeding (chestfeeding). They may also rise slightly due to the following situations: Physical stress, such as experiencing pain.
