A Doppler ultrasound may help diagnose many conditions, including: Blood clots. Poorly functioning valves in your leg veins, which can cause blood or other fluids to pool in your legs (venous insufficiency) Heart valve defects and congenital heart disease.

Doppler ultrasonography examines the blood flow in the major arteries and veins in the arms and legs with the use of ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves that echo off the body).

The test is done to help diagnose:

  • Arteriosclerosis of the arms or legs.
  • Blood clot (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Venous insufficiency.
