 450

It is also known as serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, or SGOT. AST is a protein made by liver cells. When liver cells are damaged, AST leaks out into the bloodstream and the level of AST in the blood becomes elevated.

SGOT is found in several areas of your body, including your kidneys, muscles, heart, and brain. If any of these areas are damaged, your SGOT levels may be higher than normal. For example, the levels could be raised during a heart attack or if you’ve had a muscle injury.

Few conditions and diseases that can cause high SGPT/SGOT levels are excessive alcohol consumption, Acute viral hepatitis A and B, obesity, heart attack, diabetes, Celiac disease (Autoimmune disorder), kidney disease, Hepatitis C, Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis), muscle injuries, pancreatitis, etc.
