T4 (Thyroxine)

 850

A T4 test is used to check how well your thyroid is working. It’s also used to help diagnose and monitor thyroid disease and conditions that may affect your thyroid, including: Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, which is when your thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone to meet your body’s needs.

Thyroxine (T4) is responsible for your metabolism, mood, and body temperature, among other things. T3, too, is made in the thyroid gland, and it can also be made in other tissues within the body by converting T4 (in a process called deiodination) into T3.

Reasons for too much thyroxine (T4)

This may occur for a number of reasons, including: Graves’ disease. Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies produced by your immune system stimulate your thyroid to produce too much T4. It’s the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.
