Reducing Substances

Reducing Substances, Stool – The presence of reducing substances is useful in the diagnosis of abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism, i.e., sucrose and lactase. The unabsorbed sugars in stool are measured as reducing substances.

Stool (or faecal) reducing substances is a stool sample test used to diagnose lactose intolerance (and some rare metabolic abnormalities). Lactose intolerance can be caused by a prolonged or severe episode of viral gastroenteritis.

Sugars (e.g, glucose, galactose, fructose, maltose, lactose, and pentose) are characterized as reducing substances based on their ability to reduce cupric ions to cuprous ions.
